So what's it like being an author while also being the mum of two teens?

I'm wondering if that's why I train for triathlons - a good excuse to get out of the house.I mean, here's an example: that moment your book arrives in the post, and you're opening up the box and you're soooo excited because this is a dream come true and inside that box is ANOTHER baby, and your family are surrounding you and it's just so mindblowingly exciting and you absolutely have to pinch yourself because surely...

Being a newbie author, I have a policy of always listening to those around me who know better and have more experience aka publisher, publicist, agent, experienced author friends. So the advice I got about my book launch was – don’t have one. Why? Because I’m a debut author and no one knows who I am. No one will come – except friends and family. My time and the marketing budget could be spent on better things.

So I set out NOT to have a book launch. But then when my friends and family, wh...

Thank you to everyone who attended the book launch for The Harper Effect in January. What a great turnout and the panel of elite athletes were so inspiring and entertaining.

For those of you who couldn't make it, we had an inspiring chat with a panel of amazing local young athletes. The reason they were part of the launch is that The Harper Effect is written in the world of professional tennis, and so I wanted to show people that Harper is not a fictional character who can never be eman...

READ THE QUERY LETTER THAT GOT MY NOVEL AN INTERNATION-AL BOOK DEAL

My debut novel, The Harper Effect, is in-stores today in Australia and New Zealand. If you don't feel like going out to do more shopping after the Christmas craziness, but you fancy curling up with a summer read, then you can also order it online right now. If you’re in the US/UK then I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until May 2018, or shelve the book on Goodreads for giveaway reminders.

I’ve been asked so many times about w...

I wrote the very first draft of The Harper Effect over thirty years ago when my 15-year-old brother was playing at Wimbledon and won a scholarship to the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida. At the time, I was training for the Olympics in the 400m track event. Sport was and still is an important part of my life, and even as a teen, I could see how it helped me through the usual teen angsts that we must all survive.

I hope that my novel, The Harper Effect, will do two things for my...

While I was in New York meeting my USA publisher and agent, I also got to do some research for my second book. In the final third of the book, the characters go to New York, and particularly The Metropolitan Opera House and Central Park.

I had a lot of fun researching the facilities, going on tours, taking photos, talking to people, and walking exactly in the footsteps my characters will walk in. It was like being inside the book myself. I went to the locations at night and during the da...

I'm not the first to describe the process of having your first novel published as similar to the concept of giving birth, and I won't be the last - because that's how it feels.

There's finding that partner - a great agent - to support and believe in you. The publisher plans for the best delivery of your book into the world and that 30 week scan puts a face (a book cover) on the book baby.

Working out what to name the baby is another happy problem and in my case Game Face became The Harpe...

I’m talking about Project Awesome again today, which aims to help teens go from feeling awful to feeling awesome about themselves. This is A WRAP UP after going through the five steps to healthy self esteem. If you want a recap, they’re on this blog or if you'd prefer to watch the videos, then click the video tab or find me on YouTube.

In dealing with improving self esteem we do so in a BALANCED way. Ie we recognise we’re not perfect and have weaknesses, but we establish that some of how...

Want to go from feeling awful to feeling awesome about yourself? I’m talking about Project Awesome again today, which aims to help you do just that! In step 4 of this 5 step program, we're going to look into what unhelpful rules and assumptions we live by.

Life is full of rules and assumptions. Some are helpful ie don’t drink and drive. But these rules are usually learned formally or part of the law.

Unhelpful rules are learned informally – usually during or after a social situation w...

I’m talking about Project Awesome again today, which aims to help teens go from feeling awful to feeling awesome about themselves.

In my book The Harper Effect, Aria is a talented musician but she sees herself as a failure next to her superstar sister Harper who travels the international tennis circuit. Aria has spent her life negatively comparing herself to her sister and now has deep seated beliefs that have led to low self esteem. None of her beliefs are actually facts though. They are...

Shae is a character in my novel Sassy Jam and also Payback (which you can read free on this blog).

She has had a hard time trusting guys because her dad used to hit her mom – before he died. Over time, her belief is that she, being a girl, isn’t worth much – so she never feels secure in her relationship with Drew. So self esteem can affect all parts of your life from relationships to your career, your school work, your friendships and your future choices.

So Project Awesome is something th...

SETTING: COLT is driving SHAE home from the Bi-Polar Disorder Residential Treatment Centre.

SHAE: I can’t believe this is happening. It’s official. My mom has bi-polar.

HARPER: And she’s in the best place, Shae. This is good, because she’s being looked after properly, now they know what’s really up with her.

SHAE: I guess.

COLT: You’ve done the right thing. Don’t beat yourself up about this.

HARPER: D’you wanna come stay with us?

SHAE: No I’m good. Thanks though. I need some time—to th...
